  1.     "Scarab of RA" is not a real-time game.  Nothing happens unless and until you push a button.  However, a certain amount of "game time" will usually pass whenever you do anything (some exceptions will be mentioned below).  As game time passes, the oil in your lantern will burn, your wounds will heal, you will digest food and become hungry, and so on.
  2.     Most of your time will be spent moving around.  Turning to the left or right, for example, takes one "tick" of the game clock.  Turning "about face" takes two ticks.  Clicking on the "wristwatch" button lets one tick go by.  However, "peeking" (the hollow arrow keys) takes no time at all.
  3.     How long it takes to step forward or backward is up to you.  You can set your own speed for walking (or running, or crawling) through the maze.  Your speed can range from 1 to 10.  A speed of 1 is the slowest; at this speed, it will take you 10 ticks to take one step.  At a speed of ten, one step takes only one tick.
  4.     Beware!  If you move too slowly, you may use up your food and oil too fast.  But there are hazards to moving too fast!  For example, there are traps hidden in the floor of the maze.  The slower you go, the better your chance of spotting one before you step on it.  Also, the slower you go, the better your chance of tiptoeing past them without triggering them.
  5.     Your speed also affects your ability to map; see the Help section called "Mapping".
  6.     Set and change your speed with the commands in the "Speed" menu.  It has five entries, four of which allow you to easily choose your slowest speed (which is always 1), your fastest speed (10 is the maximum, but if you are carrying a lot of weight, your top speed will be slower), and two useful speeds for mapping.  The fifth entry,  "Set Speedﾉ",  lets you enter any speed you like.  Your current speed is always shown in the status window in the lower-right corner of the screen.
